On Wednesday, September 30, the National Foundation for Celiac Awareness will present Appetite for Awareness: A Gluten-Free Cooking Spree at the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia. This high profile event will further the NFCA’s mission in raising awareness and funding for celiac disease by featuring chefs from 32 of Philadelphia’s highly acclaimed restaurants who will demonstrate their gluten-free cooking capabilities and compete for gluten-free dish of the year in an Iron Chef-like competition.
The event also will feature music, wine, gluten-free beer, raffle, and an all around great time. All of this is thanks to the generous donation of the Wachovia Center by Ed Snider, who is a member of the NFCA Board of Directors.
A VIP Reception will provide an opportunity for friends and supporters of NFCA to enjoy hors d’houvres and face time with our featured chefs.

What is Celiac Disease?
Celiac disease is an autoimmune digestive disorder that interferes with the absorption of nutrients from food. The villi of the small intestine is damaged from an immune response triggered by the protein gluten, which is found in all forms of wheat, rye and barley. The only treatment is a life-long adherence to a gluten-free diet.
Approximately 1% of the population suffers from celiac disease, yet 2 million people are undiagnosed resulting in a fourfold increase in the risk of early death and numerous debilitating conditions including infertility, neuropathy and even cancer.
Schedule:
VIP Reception: 5:30 - 7:30 pm
General Admission: 7:00 – 9:30 pm

Celiac disease is an autoimmune digestive disease that damages the small intestine and interferes with absorption of nutrients from food. Left untreated, people with celiac disease can develop further complications such as other autoimmune diseases, and some cancers. 1 in 133 Americans have celiac disease, but over 95% live undiagnosed.
The only known treatment for celiac disease is a lifelong adherence to a gluten-free diet.
